Think of your favorite song and how the words repeat over and over in your head. Well, if you put curriculum content to music, just think how that repetition will help to reinforce the concept so the students can recall short term or long term memory aspects.
I like to put key concepts to music, and we sing/read/write/learn these concepts that can be difficult and hard to memorize. These are also used as a resource to head to the computer lab to create powerpoints and mini-books that turn out to be quite impressive presentations.
I taught 1st grade for 5 years and we sang science songs about bugs, teeth, the polar ice cap melting, oil spills, organs, bones, etc...
Now teaching 3rd grade, we sing about additional songs, water cycle, rain shadows, life cycles, reducing, reusing, recycling, habits, magnets, planets and the solar system, bones, and many, many more.
The students love songs in social studies too, because the songs tell stories. My favorite in 1st grade was literacy. (decoding, comprehension, grammar, writing rules) Now that I'm in 3rd grade, my favorite songs to write and teach are in math. Students are able to excel at a much greater pace than you could ever imagine. This has become an awesome resource, as I teach in a private school where we don't have all the bells and whistles to use when teaching.
